Living a healthy lifestyle is helpful in prevention of nearly any disease or health condition, but it’s particularly important in preventing type 2 diabetes. Below are some adjustments you can make to your daily life that will go a long way in preventing and reversing prediabetes as well as preventing type 2 diabetes: Quit smoking and reduce alcohol consumption Slowly add 30 mins of exercise into your daily routine Manage your blood pressure Eat a primarily whole food plant-based diet Lifestyle Medicine has the solution! Type 2 diabetes (T2D) impacts around 12% of adults in the United States, with an increasing occurrence among younger age groups and roughly 23% of those with diabetes go undiagnosed. Research indicates that sufficiently intensive lifestyle intervention, particularly adopting a predominantly whole-food, plant-based dietary pattern, exercise, and sleep, may be comparable to bariatric surgery, a commonly recognized means of effectively achieving T2D remission, but without the potential for side effects. Lifestyle interventions are the cornerstone of therapy for lifestyle medicine, a specialty that prevents, treats, and in some case reverse chronic diseases like diabetes.
